An abused horse named Denali and his mother, Kali, found refuge at Last Stop Horse Rescue in Maine, USA. The rescue’s owner, Joyce, gave Denali his name.
Joyce describes: "It was in 2012 that my sister and I received information about a mare and her baby that needed to be rescued. Kali would bolt and run with fear. Denali a two-year-old, “wild” , never handled, was still nursing from his momma. Denali, after being gelded, headed to my sister’s home for one on one attention and training and Kali came to the rescue with me to help her with some deep rooted fear from abuse. It wasn’t long before we reunited Kali with Denali at the rescue and together, their journey continued."
Joyce relocated the rescue to North Georgia, bringing Denali and Kali on a later trip.
Lexi ShyAnn and her mother were frequent visitors to the Georgia rescue, and when Denali and Kali arrived, an unbreakable bond formed between Lexi and Denali. The connection was so strong that Joyce did something she had never done before—she allowed a horse, Denali, to leave the rescue.
Now, Denali lives with Lexi and her family, where their bond continues to grow.
The song Denali came to life as I got to know Lexi and her mother. I collaborated with my longtime writing and producing partner, J Donte, to complete the song and co-produce it. Lexi got a jumpstart on her musical journey thanks to her Papa Q, a professional musician as well, who is so proud of her eagerness to carry on his legacy. After all he, alongside Lexi's "Nanny Bug" and parents, have encouraged her passion to become a performing artist.
Once the song was finished, it was clear that only one person could truly bring it to life—14-year-old Lexi. Though she had little experience in music before, Donte coached her, and her progress was astonishing. She absorbed everything like a sponge and transformed into a true professional, making the song completely her own. After all, who else could sing it better?
A huge thank-you to the incredible musicians who contributed their talents to Denali:
• Richard Smith – guitars
• Sam Sims – bass
• Stacey Lamont Sydnor – drums
The song is raw, heartfelt, and organic.
Take a few minutes to ride with it, vibe with it, and feel the spirit of Denali.
“Bless our mysterious connection—it’s a spiritual ride!”
